NOMADIC HORIZON
Nomadic Horizon has two artists in its nucleus, Flavia Vivacqua and Sofia Panzarini, who discuss the making and the thinking of art nowadays.
We propose actions that discuss the Global People, the individual and the collectivity, the possibility of thinking the freedom of experimentation, mainly before the media dictatorship and the constitutive economic processes, always with a social, political and cultural concern that pays attention to the other and their surroundings. This is about artistic actions employing aesthetic and ethic concepts as well.
Thus, Nomadic Horizon is interested in the collective creation, urban interventions and cultural actions that lead to the deepening of its concerns and research. Thinking the city, its spatial and temporal relations, its relations of media, images, its paths and streams, its territories and borders, are some of our proposals as they are issues intrinsically connected to people of our time.
We believe in art’s potential of transforming things and it is thinking of this that we do our actions paying attention to all the constitutive process. Be in the exchange of ideas and knowledge, be in the discussion of projects, in their execution, in their developments or outcome, it is in the consciousness of the responsibility and reverberation of each action, for smaller that it might be, that we elaborate our work.
Nomadic Horizon, being clearly aware of the complexity of the process it aims to develop, finds out an alternative in the collective thinking. Thus, people get involved in interdisciplinary situations, exchanges of broad meanings, deviations and above all, respect for the other.
The understanding of collective as a way for strengthening objectives and potentials, besides the dissolution of problems and the division of work into parts, without dissolving the individual, is the very challenge of the global human being in their practice into contemporary culture. It is not about equality through the masses, while utopian equality, but equality of conditions and of generating possibilities. It is the collective that asserts the individuality and increases its importance towards an open relation with the world.

O projeto do artista plástico Tibi Meirelles, Viagens de Identidade, é um ensaio sobre a fragmentação do olhar e suas infinitas possibilidades estéticas e plásticas.
O corpo de fragmenta e se recompõe em novas combinações orgânicas onde as partes do todo, isolados e multiplicados formam novos seres harmônicos e organismos vivos.
O conceito foi sendo desenvolvido de acordo com suas experiências na pintura e na escultura. Trabalhando com tintas e pincéis, Tibi exercitou continuamente seus gestuais soturnos e sombrios, buscando a exclusão da cor para chegar a forma. A escultura em ferro foi o veículo que suportou essa transição. Seus gestuais ganharam forma definida, tridimensionalidade e leveza.
Com recursos digitais, o realismo do corpo ganha cor, fica orgânico e a busca da identidade transcende a realidade e se fragmenta em novas configurações.

The work of artist Tibi Meirelles, Inner Self Trips, is a study about eyesight fragmentation and its infinite esthetic and artistic possibilities.
The body fragments and recombines themselves into new organic combinations where as the parts of the whole are isolated and multiplied in order to form new harmonic beings and live organisms.
This concept has been being developed according to his experiences in painting and sculpture. Having been working with brushes and paints, Tibi has continuously exerted his somber and solemn gestures to achieve colour exclusion to arrive to the final form. Iron sculpture was the vehicle that best supported this transition. His gestures acquired well-defined form, 3D and lightness.
By using digital resources, body realism gains colour, becomes organic and the search for an identity transcends reality and breaks apart into new configurations.

I’m at present working on a project based on photos, performance and sounds.
The most recent, is about a series of photos of workers taken at a Market Research company in England.
Project 1. The photos are a series of portraits of people in front of their screen. I wanted to show different mood and humour depicting their characters. Their relation to an abstract presence; not having any personal and precise idea of their interlocutors.
So far, the inclusion consisted of around 20-30 portraits. Recently I’ve included photo details in the projection. I’ve done some recordings of diverse sounds such as voices, music etc.

I feel the still images convey something of the tedium involved in this work, and the sounds/music one hears when on hold, and finally the excerpt of the interview are very effective as an overlay. I also feel that the rate at which the images change is well chosen, serving to underline the slowness of the passing of time in the unit.
It’s very beautiful.'
Hervé photographed interviewers on the job, either waiting for a call to come through on an automated dialling system, or engaged in administering an electronic questionnaire to respondents over the telephone. The pictures are therefore authentic, though some shots are more stylised. The pace of market research work of this type can be quite slow, leading to spells of boredom, and fatigue, assisted by the repetitive nature of the work, where telephone interviewers tend to not only spend hours each day asking the same questions over and over again, but are quite often doing this for several days at a time. Even though the projects may vary with regard to their subject matter, the structure of the questionnaires overall is almost identical.
What Hervé's work also shows, is the diversity among the interviewers, with regards to culture and origin, and this is important, as it addresses questions of cooperation and tolerance, since people from as far away as South Africa and North America happily work alongside those from the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Italy, France, Nigeria, Germany, Russia, Austria, Spain, The Netherlands, South-East-Asia, and Britain, and no-one appears to find it unusual in the least. I feel that this is a significant aspect of the piece, demonstrating how equivocal people can be about differences between themselves and others, and that it is quite possible to get along, to work side by side, to embrace the uniqueness of others, and to be friends. Living, as we do, in a world where some governments try to restrict certain peoples' movements, where difference is all too often portrayed as something threatening, we ought perhaps to consider the example we see here.
The audio accompanying the pictures is predominantly of background sounds from the unit. The general 'brouhaha' that greets one on entering into the call centre. In my opinion, this piece provides a window into the world of not only market research, but of call centre work in general (which I can claim to have some experience of), and, of course, the chosen unit in particular.
Finishing on Beethoven's 'Fuer Elise' is a particularly nice touch. It's not only an example of what interviewers hear while waiting to be connected with a suitable potential respondent, but it also represents a different life, which many in this industry perhaps, but in this unit in particular, either dream of, hope for, or work towards, reminding us that there is a greater purpose to life than this.

O Moinho Central, aparentemente quieto e previsível, revelou-se um lugar de insólito uso cotidiano. Para alénm da ocupação esperada, marcas recentes construíram um outro espaço naquele edifício regular de concreto. Edifício sucateado de seus materiais, sobraram apenas restos de tijolos como escombros no chão. Além da estrutura de concreto não havia mais nada; esquadrias, revestimentos, tudo o que pudesse ser extraído havia sido retirado. Surpreendentemente, porém, uma outra superfície revestia as paredes desse edifício: pichações, registros, desenhos e textos [intervenções pré-históricas, enfim]
Mantido como ilha, seu único acesso é a plataforma do trem(...)

Enormes pregos de aço atravessam as paredes da Escola de Arte Visuais do Parque Laje.
O prédio, espaço de produção de obra de arte passa a ser, ele próprio, a obra.
Não é um lugar neutro esse aonde o trabalho acontece, é em si repleto de significado. Assim, quando sua arquitetura é agredida seu papel se reforça.
Gostaria que essa invasão permitisse falar de um certo incômodo... Apropriação. Afronta e posse.

pingfm - ALEMANHA
pingfm is platform for audio- video experiments within and with the internet. we broadcast since 2000 on a regular basis, every sunday for 2 (initially 4) hours. pingfm uses the streaming media format as a way to implement changes on images and sounds, the content of which is being altered by the process of data compression (image data becomes pixelised and deformed). more information, a rather huge archive and links to livestreams can be found at http://pingfm.org.
the images we contribute to the exhibition at LA ISLE are video stills taken from our archive. they have already been exhibited during the pingfm PAUSE AND PLAY exhibition in weimar, germany, in june 2003. this exhibition will be repeated in april 2004 in recife, pernambuco, brasil.
these are the images:

using old, second hand hardware led to analog experiments with video. in this case, the letters are constantly moving from left to right, back and forth, creating a kind of title effect.
SUSI
participating in a theater project together with THEATERHAUS WEIMAR E.V. in 2001, pingfm broadcast actors and action live on the internet. using the 30 second signal delay that is natural to most streaming media, the actor´s face as it is being watched on the internet is being superimposed on the realtime signal.
TV
televisions are essential to pingfm´s work. they are being used for monitoring, live feed (signal source) and image effects such as delay. in this case, out of a delay effect (a camera connected and at the same time directed to the monitor itself) we managed to create a colour field looking like a television.

Mandalas
A Mandala, símbolo universal e essencial, de integração harmônica e de
transformação. É uma palavra em sânscrito que significa "círculo". O
verdadeiro centro de um circulo é um ponto. Um ponto, no entanto, não tem
dimensão nem lugar. Assim, ele escapa não apenas à nossa percepção, mas
também à nossa imaginação. Não pertence ao nosso mundo é forma. O ponto
simboliza a unidade, a totalidade, a perfeição, sendo por isso também,
em quase todas as culturas e èpocas, um símbolo de Deus.
O ponto contem tudo, mas só em potência e não em estado manifesto. Dele
nascem o círculo e a esfera, que são as suas formas de manifestação.
Aquilo que no ponto ainda é potência meta-física ganha através do círculo
e das esferas a sua configuração. O circulo é um ponto mais uma
dimensão; assim, ele vive do ponto central, e é definido por ele - mesmo
quando esse ponto não é apreensível por nós. O ponto e o circulo - Deus e o
Mundo - O Uno e o múltiplo - o irrevelável e o revelável - o conteúdo e
a forma, o metafísico e o físico - são muitos pares de conceitos que se
referem a mesma coisa.
A Mandala pessoal vem a ser essencialmente o "espelho da alma", o
código pessoal, a viagem interna, auto-conhecimento, busca do equilíbrio,
integração com o Universo, experiência mística, representação do Eu, a
história da vida.
